Pre-School, South Croydon

Our South Croydon pre-school provides a childcare environment where your child can feel safe, and confident as they socialise with children their age in a fun, nurturing manner.

Our enhanced DBS-registered staff have your child’s best interests in mind and will take the time to get to know their specific needs, likes, and dislikes.

We accommodate a maximum of 40 children aged between 3 and 5 years in our pre-school, at a minimum ratio of 1 adult to every 8 children. This ensures all the children in our preschool have the support and attention they need.

What Our Pre-School Offers

Our pre-school offers a learning-rich environment both inside and outside of the classroom with full access to the gardens, soft play and sensory room. Each environment is fully equipped with a variety of age-appropriate resources and planned activities, as well as a wide range of literacy and mathematical resources.

The friendly, secure and stimulating environments inspire and encourage every child individually to enhance their knowledge and blossom enabling them to become happy, inquisitive and confident children. Dedicated and passionate staff constantly challenge children to explore, learn, and progress in making healthy choices and developing their own independent skills.

The transition from preschool to “big school” is a huge step, and we do our utmost to prepare the children for it, ensuring they are looking forward to this next stage in their lives with confidence.

What a Day in Our Pre-School Looks Like

Our Pre-School hosts 3 large bright classrooms, toilets and a sensory room all located off a main hallway. This bright open space flows well and provides an enriching learning environment for up to 32 children aged between 3-5 years. Children are encouraged to follow the rules and be a role model to their peers.

The children are encouraged to be independent and to take responsibility. For example, the children can independently use the bathroom but they must ask permission before leaving the room.

The excellent relations we nurture and encourage between practitioner and child ensure each child feels secure and supported enabling them to reach their own full potential.

The pre-school provides continual opportunities for children to independently access a range of malleable materials, crafts, construction, small world and role play alongside the planned activities. The Key Worker system ensures each child’s key worker is providing tailor-made opportunities and experiences to suit each child.

Morning

7:30am – Welcome the children for the day
Children are welcomed into the pre-school, where they complete self-registration and then have the option of a self-serve breakfast or a selection of activities. After breakfast, the children are expected to clear up after themselves, before finding a story to read.
9:00am – Class discussion
Children are encouraged to engage in circle time where discussion about the current topic and word of the week take place. Makaton is practiced and children are encouraged to share any news and discuss their emotions. This valuable sharing of information helps encourage self-worth and self-confidence.
9:15am – Morning learning activities
The morning activities have a clear learning intent and the teaching and sharing of information and experiences. Children are very much a part of their learning and their curious minds shape what and how they learn.
10:00am – Snack time
The rolling snack bar means children can choose to eat their snack when convenient to them, this way no one’s learning or creativity is interrupted. Children are asked to wash their hands, take their snacks, and sit at a table.
10:30am – Garden time and extracurricular activities
Children are encouraged to independently get ready for outdoor play or to take part in their weekly forest school class.
11:15am – Tidy up before lunchtime
Children are encouraged to be respectful and responsible for their environment by participating in tidy-up time. Children then share a story and wash their hands.
11:30am – Lunchtime

Children sit at tables of up to six and are encouraged to collect their food before returning to the table, children independently help themselves to water throughout the day and will get their cups from the water station. Children talk to each other during their meal and good table manners are encouraged. After lunch, the children are encouraged to tidy away their plates and cups before sitting down with a book.

All meals and snacks are made fresh in-house daily by our experienced chef. The 3 weekly rota ensures a nutritious and balanced diet enabling children to try a wide variety of foods.

Afternoon

12:00 - Nap time

After lunch those that sleep will be encouraged to rest on beds within another room. The rest of the children will participate in quieter activities including puzzles and board games where turn-taking, problem-solving solving and cooperation is learnt.

2:00pm – Snack time

Same as in the morning children can choose to eat snacks when is convenient to them. We still have an established afternoon snack time, where children are asked to wash their hands, take their snacks, and sit at a table.

2:30pm – Afternoon learning activities

The afternoon activities have a clear learning intent and the teaching and sharing of information and experiences will enhance and influence the child’s knowledge of the topics helping to support the child’s participation and enjoyment of an activity. Children are very much a part of their learning and their curious minds shape what and how they learn.

3:30pm – Tidy away and story time

Children tidy away for a story with a practitioner.

3:45pm – Afternoon Tea

Children sit at small tables and are encouraged to talk about their day what they have enjoyed and what they have learnt. Children are encouraged to independently get their tea and to tidy away after themselves.

4:15pm – Soft play

Children enjoy physical play within a specifically designed environment.

5:00pm – 6:00pm – Free Play and Home Time

Children can choose from a variety of activities either carpet or table topped based, before parents are welcomed and children are said goodbye to for the evening.

What Our Parents Said...

I have previously reviewed the nursery when my son was younger, however, I have been so impressed with the transition from nursery care to pre-school care at Abbey Wood Grange that I wanted to leave another… I was particularly impressed with the nursery's communication to parents as to the changes that would be made and the information given with regards to preparing for school and I can see that my son is thriving on the different learning activities that have been implemented… I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this nursery for babies all the way up until school.

Review from Carina W (Mother of Child)
Overall Experience:  Abbey wood gardens

Both my children have attended this nursery since they were 11 months old. My youngest is in pre-school here and she loves it. At first, she used to cry but now is happy as soon as she is with carers and friends. Her carers and staff are really lovely here.

Review from Krishma P (Mother of Child)
Overall Experience:  Abbey wood gardens

Abbey Wood Grange has provided excellent care for my son from a baby through to pre-school. The nursery is good value for money and the staff are great. Communication with parents is very good and the standard of care overall has been wonderful. It is also close to Kenley station which is very useful for me. I would recommend this nursery to anyone in the area.

Review from Craig G (Father of Child)
Overall Experience:  Abbey wood gardens

Our child is extremely happy at Abbey Wood Grange. The staff are wonderful, so kind and helpful, and really care about the children. They settled our child so well and really dampened any concerns we had about sending them to nursery. We are very pleased with the choice we made and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Abbey Wood Grange to other parents.

Emma C (Mother of Child)
Overall Experience:  Abbey wood gardens

Our second child is now at Abbey Wood Grange and he is thriving, he comes out every day so happy. They provide a wonderful menu, far more varied than I manage to provide at home plus accommodating his dairy allergy. We know the staff really well by now and always get a warm welcome at drop-offs/pick-ups.
