The Role of Technology in Today’s World

Technology plays an immense part in our daily lives regardless of how young or old we are and whilst it undoubtedly has huge benefits, we need to be aware of how it is implemented. So how much is too much? And how do we keep safe online?

A screen is defined as any of the following:

  • Phones
  • TVs
  • Computers
  • Tablets
  • Gaming devices

Studies have shown that 2-year-olds spend, on average, 17 hours a week in front of a screen.

By 3, their screen time had increased to 25 hours a week, going back down to 11 hours at around the time a child starts school.

Whilst there are no concrete guidelines on what the right amount is, what is conclusive within all the research is that Pre-schoolers learn by interacting with the world around them. They need to be physically active, to run, climb, and swing on the playground and to have creative outlets like drawing or dress-up. Some guidelines suggest that excessive time on screens could damage their ability to develop language and social skills.

Parents are a child’s primary educator and they should never underestimate the value and impact they can have within their child’s life. All children will naturally look up to their parents and model behaviours seen, therefore it is imperative that parents display desirable behaviours regarding the use of their own screens.

3 Simple Screen Time Rules

  1. No screens at meal times
  2. No screens during ‘quality’ times for example story and bed time.
  3. If your child is engaging in conversation do not answer a message or call

Do not put your screen before the needs of your child, is Facebook/Twitter really more important to you?

Good practice indicates that children aged between 2 to 5 years should have no more than 1 hour of screen time each day. The exception to this rule is video chatting with grandparents or other family friends, which is considered quality time interacting with others.

Screen time can also be a positive experience, providing a chance for you to interact with your child and teach lessons about the world. With lots of educational Apps available, it is advisable to investigate these before purchasing, what are they promoting? what is the outcome for the child? do they incur any hidden costs?

If you are worried about your child’s screen usage, ask yourself these key questions:

  • Is screen time in your household controlled?
  • Does screen use interfere with what your family want to do?
  • Does screen use interfere with sleep?
  • Are you able to control snacking during screen times?
  • What would happen if you took the screen form your child?
  • What does your child do/watch during screen time? Is some of it beneficial or educational, as well as entertaining?
